Hello, my name is Kirstie and I have been teaching for 21 years. I have spent time both in British secondary schools and in schools in Vietnam and Singapore. My main subject and passion is the study of History and I can teach this from Key Stage 3 all the way up to A-Level. My favourite period is the Tudors and I particularly enjoy the stories of the women of this time. I also tutor KS3 English and GCSE English Language and English Literature and am very familiar with AQA, Eduqas and Edexcel exam boards. I also have experience teaching Geography up to GCSE and find the two subjects actually quite complement each other with many of the themes over-lapping. I discovered a love for geography from my love of the great outdoors – I would often find myself on the top of a mountain admiring glacial landscapes and wondering how all the features were formed. This in turn links to my philosophy for education: I believe education should be a journey of discovery that allows the learner to move forwards with their knowledge and understanding of the world around them without putting them under so much pressure that they don’t enjoy it. I believe that effort is necessary in order to be successful, but that learning should not be a struggle or something that is dreaded. I am here to help students achieve their goals and become successful members of their community. In my spare time I enjoy running and drinking coffee with friends. I have 2 cats and have been married for almost 7 years. I am currently learning French in order to pursue my dream of moving to France to start a new life on the continent. As well as my degree in History and English and Literary Studies and my PGCE History, I have a TESOL certificate. I spent a month in Prague getting my TESOL and then taught ESL in Vietnam for 2 years. Outside of classroom education, I have my Lowland Leader award and spent 4 years running the Duke of Edinburgh award at my school.

ABOUT ME I have a deep interest in history, human and physical geography, anthropology, technology, architecture and engineering. I especially enjoy the history and geography of languages and language families. I am a keen traveller, audiophile and technophile, with a love for all kinds of technologies, analogue and digital, new and old. Thanks to COVID I learnt a lot of DIY skills through necessity. My house also has a garden full of fruit trees, so I guess that would make me an amateur gardener by default. I try to keep fit by cycling when possible, but my favourite sport is swimming. TEACHING EXPERIENCE/PREFERENCES The subjects I teach are History, English Literature and Language for GCSE and A-level, as well as EFL/ESL English. I tend to teach students aged 14+, so from Year 9 to Year 13 or older, but I do have a few students younger than this. I use a variety of teaching approaches, ranging from traditional methods of text analysis to modern forms of teaching, such as interactive quizzes, questionnaires and even YouTube videos if they benefit the students learning style. Exam Board Experience: AQA, Edexcel and OCR in the main. WJEC/Eduqas to a lesser extent. Languages:- English: as a first language to advanced level. Turkish: fluent to college level.

Having left secondary school in Scotland with seven Highers and an Advanced Higher only four years ago, as well as having experienced studying online during the pandemic while at university, I understand the challenges facing students right now. I joined GoStudent in May 2023, and since then have been working with students across multiple age groups, from KS2 to GCSE. My teaching background is in youth theatre and drama classroom contexts - I was the assistant tutor for the LAMDA Grades 1-5 at Eden Court Theatre, Inverness from 2017-2020, and the director of Millburn Academy Drama Club from 2017-2020. It was here that I developed my teaching style, which focuses on identifying gaps in students' knowledge and skillsets and facilitating a student-focused approach in which I work with the student to explore the techniques that are right for them. Working with the students at LAMDA involved developing their close reading skills to extract information about character and context from a monologue and exploring effective memorisation techniques for line-learning with each individual student, and this individualised, student-led approach is essential to my teaching. I am particularly skilled in literacy, comprehension, and essay-writing. My drama background informs my tutoring, as I aim to bring some flair to lessons, while balancing fun with learning! I believe in removing all barriers to educational achievement, and have always striven to be fair, kind and open-minded to the young people I teach, seeing students not just as grades, but whole people, and supporting them throughout their education with empathy and compassion. Outside of teaching I'm an avid bookworm, film buff, and baker. I am studying Biotechnology at the University of Nottingham and have been tutoring students from KS2 to A-Level for two years. I am passionate about making learning more fun for my pupils because that way they'll learn better. I am very good at explaining difficult concepts in different ways so that all students understand. I did A Levels in Biology (AQA), Chemistry (AQA), Economics (Edexcel). I am in my third year of Biotechnology BSc (Hons) and have studied a variety of modules during my studies that equiped me with relevant knowledge that will allow me to stretch my students who want to know more about science. I help my students reach their maximum potential by focusing on building the skills that they will need to succeed in exams. Exam skills are often the downfall of even very intelligent students. Exams are stressful and unnatural enviroments, but by practicing all types of questions together, my students have gone on to achieve grades that they would not have thought possible.

I'm currently doing a degree in Psychology with the majority of my work being online, therefore have gained quite a bit knowledge regarding doing things remotely. I am a third-year undergraduate student studying Chemistry at the University of Leicester. Throughout my studies, I have seen how hard learning can be. I hope to help students build confidence and gain a deeper understanding of their subject area so they can reach their full potential during exams. I aim to base my teaching around individual students and their needs. I would like to focus on exam question practice using techniques that helped me through my studies.

Becky is brilliant!! My kids absolutely love working with her and she sticks to the brief we originally set which was getting my son to have more confidence. The important factor in why I wanted extra support was for my sons confidence and it is working a treat. It definately makes him feel smarter which is perfect.

Unaisah Is a brilliant tutor and in the words of my daughter she is better than both my school teachers put together. She helps me to understand things in a way that is on my level whilst still being able to help me achieve a higher grade. I wish all school teachers were like her.
