Despite every student being different, experience helps tremendously. Some students are very advanced and prefer working on past paper questions by tackling some specific aspects of the exam board, while some others require a bit more work on some modules and require a session more akin to covering a variety of concepts. When teaching new concepts, I use self-made PowerPoint slides specifically designed to incorporate the knowledge required to succeed in the exam questions for that exam board. In these slides, I use a scaffolding teaching technique which is about covering fundamental learning outcomes prior moving towards the more advanced concepts. I also incorporate past paper questions in every lesson to ensure the student is engaging in proactive learning, and not simply passively listening to me talk for 50 minutes. Overall, my goal is to engage the student in his or her own learning by teaching them skills and by giving them greater focus in some areas of each module. A lot of concepts are covered in these exam boards but knowing where to place great emphasis surely fosters their learning. This is where experience teaching these exams really comes into play, and it will also help me quickly devise the best study plan for the student. To complement my online teaching sessions, I have a digital pad that enables me to quickly write notes, draw or paste diagrams to ensure the lesson is smooth and dynamic. Online teaching may seem, at first glance, limited in terms of being able to write notes, however, currently online learning has been greatly updated thanks to such devices. I am currently only teaching biology and chemistry from GCSE and A-level exams but not higher levels (i.e. not teaching university programs). Like many teachers, my personal preference are students that are keen on learning regardless of their starting point. However, I have taught students that needed motivation coming from me and I was able to help them significantly. Hello my name is Edward, I am currently a first undergraduate studying Mechanical Engineering at UCL. I have a year of tutoring experience and I'm here to help assist fellow students. I have many hobbies, I enjoy keeping fit by practising kickboxing and going to the gym regularly. I also play guitar and have a passion for music. I also try to spend a good amount of time reading, i'm currently making my way through the Game of Thrones books. I then went on to obtain an A* in A level Maths, an A in A level Further Maths, an A in A level physics and a B in A level psychology. I'm literally so overjoyed to have had the amazing opportunity to join GoStudent as a tutor back in April 2023 and I just wanted to elaborate further on my academic and in addition extracurricular skills which have equipped me greatly to be able to shine a light on my own capabilities as well as my weaknesses at this time! I think that I have developed my communication skills via group work with the rest of the tutors and programme coordinators and also have had the privilege to really just go into further detail about what actually makes me tick and I really appreciate how supportive everyone has been in terms of my development and progress thus far. But how about he excitement of sharing a wonderful session with my tutees? We usually discuss the relevance of outside-of-the-box thinking and how phenomenal it is when the student and their loved ones get to choose what will happen during the lesson itself and also set the standards regarding the content to be covered so the sessions are usually quite fun and engaging to be honest! :-) I really enjoyed my time at the UCL School of Pharmacy while studying for the MPharm degree and I am just waiting to be able to sit some deferred final year exams and graduate hopefully quite soon following a recent gap year actually. I did graduate with a first in MSci in Pharmaceutical Studies back in October 2022. Now I am just in the process of applying for medical school and tend to spend my free time on either reading novels, playing the keyboard or making artsy-craftsy notes which will hopefully contribute towards a revision blog that I am starting to establish. I also like going for walks and exploring all sorts of new exciting places within London. I did of course go to Exeter medical school back in 2017 and left (for personal reasons such as the PBL structure of the course) before joining UCL in 2018. This means I am quite agile when it comes to things like discussing interview techniques and CV requirements if needed for individual students. I also tend to motivate my tutees to stay and CONTINUE with what they are doing rather than back away, especially in the face of challenges! This is because I myself wish I hadn't left medicine and now am re-applying so it indicates my perseverence and understanding of the new and surprising aspects of the course! ;)
