How do I choose the correct 11+ tutor for my child?
What is the 11+ exam?
The 11+ exam is an optional exam that is usually taken in the final year of primary school.
Your child will need to take the exam if you want them to attend a grammar school or a selective secondary school. Generally, children who sit the 11+ exam are academically gifted and get above average results.
What does the 11+ exam consist of?
The exam your child will take will depend on the school you are applying for. There are four different courses that can be covered:
Verbal Reasoning – requires good vocabulary, basic maths and/or problem-solving
Non-verbal Reasoning - requires abstract problem-solving type questions using shapes and patterns, and is not related to English or language skills
English - requires an understanding of grammar and comprehension
Maths - requires the use of concepts taught in Key Stage 2
When should you start 11+ exam revision?
Most of the course content will have been taught in Key Stage 2. If your child has confidently soared through everything, then a few months of revision and plenty of practice can be enough. If there are any problem areas it’s wise to start at least one year in advance.
What should I revise for the 11+ exam?
Revision strategies are tailored to the different exam courses as follows:
Verbal Reasoning: Practice spelling quizzes and crosswords across the Key Stage 2 English course content. Also look for practice material that’s specific to the types of questions your area will include
Non-verbal Reasoning: Enhance your child’s spatial awareness through 3D jigsaw puzzles, model-making kits, brain training games and Sudoku
English: Reading cements grammar and enhances vocabulary. The exam will usually have an essay question so your child should practice writing short stories within a time limit
Maths: Make sure your child is familiar with all of the concepts taught during Key Stage 2 and they know their times tables inside out
Are there 11+ exam online course books available?
You can order the books online and your tutor can advise you on which are the most appropriate. They can also provide a reading list that helps with the English component and verbal reasoning.
